Fans of classic dub reggae rejoice! This fine disc consists of dub instrumental tracks from the late '70s mixed and engineered by reggae icons King Tubby and Lee Perry, as well as the lesser-known but equally experienced Philip Smart. (Smart would go on to engineer for and produce the Congos and many dancehall favorites, including Spragga Benz and Shinehead.) These songs were originally sung by Watty Burnett before he joined the Congos, and they feature Burnett's soulful voice (the choruses, anyway); deep, dark earthy beats; rich horns; and the universe-turned-inside-out-upside-down sonic treatments by Tubby, Perry, and Smart. Perry takes his version of the soul classic "Rainy Night in Georgia" into the Twilight Zone. Tubby's "Splash Out Dub" is downright eerie, but the song retains its rootsy soul, and one can hear the influence--directly or not--King Tubby has on hip-hop and beat- and sample-driven music. This is not an album for the casual reggae fan, but fans of dub--as well as those who like spaced-out but rhythmic sounds--will treasure this.
