The single-disc, 14-track dub compilation In the Red Zone: The Essential Collection of Classic Dub makes for the perfect introduction to the genre, featuring classic cuts from the biggest names in dub: Augustus Pablo (the legendary "King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown"), Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby, Prince Far I, Scientist, the Mad Professor, and Black Uhuru, plus slightly less well-known but equally talented artists like Keith Hudson, Yabby You, Tappa Zukie, and the Rockers Almighty. Further enhancing the package's value as an introductory sampler, the brief yet informative liner notes list the original albums from which all tracks were taken, providing starting points for deeper exploration. One could quibble that artists aren't always represented by signature cuts, and that there's much more necessary listening than what's included here, but In the Red Zone doesn't aim to be a definitive overview of dub; rather, it's one of the best introductory dub samplers yet assembled. It's everything a beginner could ask for, and even already-converted aficionados will likely be pleased with the uniform strength of the material, although some may long for a more thorough retrospective with more detailed annotation. ~ Steve Huey
