Ronnie Hawkins' stay at Fred Foster's Monument Records in the early to mid-'70s only lasted through two albums. And while neither created the hoped-for commercial resurgence in Hawkins' career, each was a solid effort, and between the two they captured two distinctly different sides of Hawkins' work -- the first ten sides here from Rock & Roll Resurrection offer Hawkins as the big, bold, soulful rock & roll shouter on which much of his reputation rests, with a bunch of first-rate Nashville players; the next 11 songs, from the follow-up album, present him in a more lyrical and subtle mode, even doing ballads. And some listeners will be amazed at how well Hawkins sings the latter, and how effective he is.
