Ronnie Hawkins' stay at Fred Foster's Monument Records in the early to mid-'70s only lasted through two albums. And while neither created the hoped-for commercial resurgence in Hawkins' career, each was a solid effort, and between the two they captured two distinctly different sides of Hawkins' work -- the first ten sides here from Rock & Roll Resurrection offer Hawkins as the big, bold, soulful rock & roll shouter on which much of his reputation rests, with a bunch of first-rate Nashville players; the next 11 songs, from the follow-up album, present him in a more lyrical and subtle mode, even doing ballads. And some listeners will be amazed at how well Hawkins sings the latter, and how effective he is. The See for Miles version of this CD has first-rate sound and extremely thorough annotation. ~ Bruce Eder
