Alabama-born Dinah Washington made her first recordings for Harry Lim's Keynote label in December 1943. A stunning vocalist from the get-go, she eventually grew into one of Mercury/Emarcy's most popular performers on the strengths of her blues and jazz background, even as she took on increasing amounts of mainstream pop material and began recording with conventional studio orchestras and strings. In 1999 the See for Miles label came out with a CD compilation of Dinah Washington performances recorded between 1952 and 1960 and issued on 45-rpm 7" vinyl EPs. The "extended play" format allowed for two songs or roughly six minutes' worth of music per side. This exciting collection reveals what both jukebox audiences and the record-buying public were tapping into during the period when "Miss D" was busily making 10" and 12" LPs like Blazing Ballads, Dynamic Dinah, In the Land of Hi-Fi, Jazz Sides, and Dinah Jams. The overview of 28 titles presents a full stylistic range from her early R&B tunes through jazzy ballads to the full-bodied splendor of lush production numbers like "What a Diff'rence a Day Made." Dinah's backing bands contained an almost unnerving array of great jazz players. These included trumpeters Ray Copeland and Clark Terry; trombonists Jimmy Cleveland, Julian Priester, and Quentin "Butter" Jackson; bassist Milt Hinton; and pianists Beryl Booker, Wynton Kelly, and Joe Zawinul. Dinah's saxophone lineup is the most daunting of all: Ellingtonians Ben Webster, Russell Procope, and Paul Gonsalves; Count Basie's bandmaster Frank Wess; R&B champion Eddie Chamblee; and bop legend Wardell Gray; as well as master modernists Benny Golson, Charles Davis, Hal McKusick, Sahib Shihab, and Jerome Richardson. Dinah Washington could transform any song into a substantial piece of work, even when backed by ensembles that would have made most singers sound insipid. This amazing woman handled many different styles, but in the final analysis everything she ever sang was fully informed by the blues and jazz traditions that made her who she was. ~ arwulf arwulf
