The Kingston Trio were the best-selling vocal group in the world during the late '50s and very early '60s, and Capitol Records made sure there was plenty of Trio product on the market, releasing some eight EPs between 1957 and 1964 in between all the singles and albums the group produced in their seven-year run with the label. This set collects the material from those EPs onto a single disc, and the end result makes for a pretty fair introduction to the group, containing all of the Trio's biggest hits, including "Lemon Tree," Hoyt Axton's "Greenback Dollar," Pete Seeger's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?," and "Tom Dooley," the old Appalachian murder ballad that started the whole Kingston Trio success story when it hit the top of the pop charts in 1958. There are countless Kingston Trio anthologies currently on the market that also include these songs, so this one isn't exactly essential in that regard, but it won't disappoint, either. ~ Steve Leggett|
