Otis Blackwell probably wrote more great early rock songs than anybody this side of Leiber and Stoller, but he began as a performer (he had an R&B hit with "Daddy Rollin' Stone" in the early '50s). Here, from an album recorded in 1977, he not only reclaims his songs, he practically exemplifies them.
The vaunted vocal similarity to Elvis Presley is intact, but after a listen to, say, his version of "Fever" you begin to understand why Blackwell would never have made it on '50s pop radio; he sounds just too raw and unhinged (Screamin' Jay Hawkins only wished he sounded this weird). Also adding to the fun is a backing group that can't decide whether it's playing '60s garage psychedelia or a wedding in Great Neck. Consumer note: The last three tracks are in mono, and from the style of the arrangements they would seem to be actual demos from the '50s, precisely the sort of stuff Blackwell would have passed along to Elvis.
