An album rooted in black America's plight, 1971's LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING revolves around African American spirituals and the soulful, often bluesy jazz stylings of drummer Max Roach's sextet. Mirroring the struggle for equality, this album celebrates black resilience against the backdrop of oppression and racism.
Roach and his group accompany a gospel choir, under the direction of singer J. C. White. Five of the six selections heard here are traditional, including "Troubled Waters," "Let Thy People Go," "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord," "Joshua," and the famous "Motherless Child." However, the album's highlight may be Patricia Curtis and Max Roach's composition "Garden of Prayer," a slow groove that features the wonderful singing of J. C. White himself. LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING reminds us of America's dark past while giving us cause to consider a more hopeful future.
