From his days with Husker Du and Sugar, Bob Mould has made a career of setting the poetry of quiet rage to gliding melodies and stormy musical backdrops. Solo, his poems are generally set further in relief, and THE LAST DOG AND PONY SHOW finds him fleshing out his tales of despair in a familiar band setting. With solid, straightforward arrangements, Mould manages, as ever, to strike a perfect balance between his graceful words and the heavy stomp of his musical accompaniment.
The dolorous repetition of "New #1's" melody sets the stage for the intentful rage of its lyric. The proceedings accelerate and become heavier as the albums crashes through the liberating "Moving Trucks" (which features a disarmingly hopeful lyric) and the close harmonies and all-out rock thrash of "Taking Everything." "First Drag Of The Day" features a bit of sonic experimentation and choppy, grinding arrangement. A look back to Mould's more easy going, acoustic-based work is seen in the slow, contemplative "Who Was Around?" and the confessional "Vaporub."
