The second volume of the Original Electro Album series isn't quite as enjoyable as the first, though it's another decent way to become acquainted with what helped inspire the early-2000s electroclash scene. Again, "electro" has somehow become another word for synth pop or new wave; its origin as the stylistic term that classified synth-reliant but funk-inspired artists like Man Parrish, the Egyptian Lover, Cybotron, and Afrika Bambaataa (think Herbie Hancock and Funkadelic as elders, not Roxy Music and David Bowie) has become somewhat blurred. Problematic title and a handful of bizarre inclusions aside (Simple Minds' "Alive and Kicking" and Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" are wrongheaded picks for those groups), there's plenty of fitting '80s selections, including Cabaret Voltaire's "Sensoria," the Human League's "Sound of the Crowd," Thomas Dolby's "Europa and the Pirate Twins," and Japan's "Visions of China." ~ Andy Kellman
