This 25-song CD is above average in sound quality, making use of the best masters on its songs -- drawn about equally from British and American acts -- as they existed in 2003. The song selection itself is pretty much an array of top-charting upbeat tracks, some (such as "Surf City" by Jan & Dean or the Beach Boys' "I Get Around") with an overt summer or teenage-consciousness orientation, and others just fun listening. Some of it, such as Bobby Vee's "Rubber Ball" and Freddie & the Dreamers' "I'm Telling You Now," are a little too close to pop music for comfort (Vee may have sung a bit like Buddy Holly, but one hopes that Holly never would have ever used anything on his records, had he lived, resembling the "bouncy bouncy" girl chorus on Vee's "Rubber Ball"). Otherwise, there are no notes and no surprises, or, rather, as few surprise as one might expect on a CD that features Helen Shapiro's "Walkin' Back to Happiness," the Marcels' "Blue Moon," and the Bonzo Dog Band's "I'm the Urban Spaceman" side by side. The Nashville Teens' "Tobacco Road" and Joe South's "Games People Play" don't seem to fit, but they add to the fun. ~ Bruce Eder
