Bob Brozman must be one of the most adaptable musicians on the planet. On this collaboration, he slides his Hawaiian style alongside kora player Djeli Moussa Diawara, and it's a perfect union that mixes in some blues, like the Africa goes to the Delta "Maloyan Blues," and "Uncle Joe," which touches a primal vein through Brozman's earthy singing and accomplished slide work. The epic "Nkaminyo Yelena Ma" features the muscular ripples of Diawara's playing and his grand voice, while "Malaga" and the light, melodic "Malaika" are both glorious duets, with one man pushing the other further until they hit the stratosphere on their improvisations. There's no leader or follower; this is a meeting of cultures on an equal footing, string for string, that's a joy for any listener as these two virtuosos get together. ~ Chris Nickson|
