Personnel: Utah Phillips (vocals); Ani DiFranco (vocals, acoustic, electric, tenor & steel guitars, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, bass, percussion, thumb piano, samples); Darcie Deaville (fiddle).
Recorded at Congress House Studio, Austin, Texas in March 1996. Includes liner notes by Ani DiFranco and Utah Phillips.
Released shortly after a somewhat controversial EP (MORE JOY, LESS SHAME) that playfully tweaked folk traditionalists with a half hour of trip-hop experiments and a live version of "Joyful Girl" sung with Doc Severinson and the Buffalo Philharmonic, THE PAST DIDN'T GO ANYWHERE continues the singer-songwriter's iconoclastic streak. Though the album is billed as a duet with leftist political balladeer Utah Phillips, the construction of the record is rather strange. Phillips doesn't sing here but extemporizes often- fascinating monologues on a variety of topics both political and personal. DiFranco took these tapes of Phillips and recorded unobtrusive instrumental backing for them, playing nearly all the instruments-tenor, acoustic, electric, and steel guitars, bass, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer piano, percussion, thumb piano and samples--by herself, with Darcie Deaville adding touches of fiddle here and there. The resulting 12 tracks are a strange but often beautiful sort of folkie-dub.
