Starting from their Cajun roots and working their way outward, fiddler/vocalist Michael Doucet and his progressive New Orleans cronies continue to update the Cajun tradition with touches of jazz, pop and world music. Richard Thompson contributes fiery electric guitar to the title tune, and adds some fine acoustic work to "Charivari." Tex-Mex legend Augie Meyers lends his voice and piano to his own composition "Can't You See," an R&B song done here with a zydeco lilt.
While Doucet's impassioned fiddle style is clearly grounded in the Cajun verities, as evidenced by the traditional "Les Blues De La Prison," the addition of instruments that fall quite outside the usual Cajun/zydeco milieu, such as lap steel, Hammond organ and clarinet, widen the scope of L'AMOUR DU LA FOLIE and makes for a perfect mixture of tradition and innovation.
