Personnel: Gary Miller (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandola). This is a fitting example of how this Northern England folk-rock band conducted itself on-stage. Having the reputation of putting on one of the most energetic and exhausting live shows in rockdom, the Whisky Priests frequently took their road show to Deutschland, where their following might have been the most rabid. This live concert in Hamburg was recorded on the heels of their 1998 masterpiece, Think Positive, and thus contains several of that album's gems, including "This Village," "Side by Side," and "A Better Man Than You." Rarely has this band employed the same personnel from one album to the next; however, on Here Come the Ranting Lads: Live!, the Miller brothers retained the services of the same lineup found on Think Positive -- hence these songs are well-rehearsed and duly tight. Lead vocalist and guitarist Gary Miller and his accordion-playing brother, Glenn Miller, receive stellar backup from lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Hugh Bradley, bassist Andy Tong, and drummer Cozy Dixon. Too bad this proved to be the final album by this impressive outfit, even as the band was upping the seemingly unsurpassable standard of excellence established in its early years. In hindsight, the Whisky Priests were never as stable and tight behind the scenes as they appeared on-stage and in the studio, so the ongoing personnel conflicts were too taxing to warrant them trudging forward merely for the sake of the band. The Millers formed Mad Dogs and Englishmen shortly after the disbandment of the Whisky Priests. ~ Dave Sleger
