DON'T HOLD BACK is full of hip-hop's urban immediacy, but that hard edge is balanced by the smooth, emotive R&B vocalizing that is central to the group's sound. While the full-hearted plaints of the ballads "Man Ain't Supposed to Cry" and "When I See You" reach back to the mid-'70s Philly soul sound, Public Announcement can also get funky with the best of them. The surging riffs and aggressive rhythms of the title song and the blend of syncopation and unbridled lust of "Mamacita" represent the group's more outgoing side. Ultimately, both of these elements combine, lending the group and the album a unified sound that's more than the sum of its parts.
