Ever since 1986, when Bruce Hornsby won his first Grammy for Best New Artist, he's maintained a successful solo career, hop-scotched between recording and touring, and become a temporary member of the Grateful Dead. He's also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Branford Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt, and Don Henley. Fourteen years into his career, Hornsby released this 2-CD live set as a gift to fans who'd asked for an in-concert document of this immensely gifted pianist's diverse talents.
Over the span of 18 songs, Hornsby and his band stretch and twist through well-known hits like "Mandolin Rain," "The Way it Is" and "The End of the Innocence" along with covers by some of Hornsby's favorite artists. Among the composers the lanky Virginian pays tribute to are Bob Dylan ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh, it Takes a Train to Cry"), George Gershwin ("I Loves You Porgy"), Samuel Barber ("Nocturne"), Bill Evans ("Twelve Tone Tune"), and Bud Powell ("Tempus Fugit"). Hornsby even works in a pair of Dead tunes ("Lady With a Fan," "Black Muddy River") amidst eclectic improvisation that finds him putting a bluegrass spin on his "Jacob's Ladder" before segueing into the high-lonesome standard "Blackberry Blossom."
