Junkster by Junkster is a truly good album. Lead singer Deirdre O'Neill's voice is utterly intoxicating -- slick and sweet. The album manages to be both intensely honest and cheeky, moving and humorous. It deserves a place in anyone's collection, and leaves you longing for a follow-up. It opens with the biting humor of "Mr. Blue" with its great hook. It's a song addressed to a lover that expected you to be everything: "I won't be your confusion/I won't be your mortal sin/Look where all your lyin's got you." The next track, "Subside," is sexy as hell, leading into the unabashed need of "Only One." "Only One" is almost painful to listen to: "People say you'll never take me with you...will you?/If you have to go, won't you if you still believe that I am the only one?" It starts off tender and soft, leading up to a decadent ending that positively stings. The next couple of tracks, though good, aren't particularly notable when compared to the rest of the album. "Clown" is a lavish number, complete with strings and a background chorus. "Feed on Me" is a song about need in a completely different sense. It's also imminently danceable. "Liar" is another song addressed to a former lover and it's as vicious as the title would imply. "Little Bird" is a wrenching torch song and the album wraps up with "Waen," a poignant song of regret: "I should have been there to protect you/I should have sheltered you from all harm." Junkster moves seamlessly from acoustic to electric, from angry to regretful. It comes dangerously close to being a perfect album. ~ Melinda Hill
