Twenty-one-year-old country chanteuse Mindy McCready uses her second album to address relationship issues specific to young women, in songs like the catchy opener, "What If I Do'" which includes quirky spoken interjections and explores sexual decisions with a straightforwardness unusual in country music. Upbeat country rhythms and McCready's surprisingly mature, full vocals characterize most of the songs on IF I DON'T STAY THE NIGHT, as does her spirited sense of independence, which is stated well and boldly in "This is Me," when McCready sings, "This is me, take it or leave it/I'm my own girl and you'd better believe it."
