デビュー・アルバム『Room For Squares』は天井知らずに売れ続けているし、グラミー賞は貰っちゃうわで、人気／実力共に絶好調なジョン君……かと思いきや、本作制作中はずっと失恋の痛手と向き合っていたそうだ。なるほど、浮ついたところのない実直な〈足固め作〉となっている。これなら大出世作のあとに皆が陥る続編スランプのジンクスとも無縁だろう。「エレキ・ギターで温かいサウンドを作りたかった」と本人も言っていたが、前作よりエレキ多用であるにも関わらず、ほんわかと柔らかく包み込んでくれるあたりには苦労の跡が偲ばれる。詩人としてめざすはボブ・ディラン、ギタリストとしてめざすはスティーヴィ・レイ・ヴォーンというのも十分に頷けようが、とにかく彼のスモーキー・ヴォイス、特に裏返っちゃう瞬間なんぞにトキメクってのが素直な聴き方かもしれない。一見変哲なさげで、実はアクの強さが魅力。
