La India has surely come a long way since her beginnings as a young dance music chanteuse. This salsera's singing is bright, powerful, and brimming with soul on SOLA, which is dedicated in its entirety to the extraordinary diva La Lupe. The presence of the esteemed Isidro Infante is felt all through the album, with his hands at the mixing and production board as well as the piano, keys, and vibraphone. "Hielo" opens the album on a bittersweet note--the instantly cheery feel to the tune makes for a stirring contrast with India's testimony: "All I feel now is the freeze of ice..." It's a fine example of her unique vocal style, which easily jumps from bluesy rhythmic syncopations to striking operatic leaps. Elsewhere, India surely delivers the goods on the slow-cooking "Que Te Pedi," a sultry, big-band bolero that again sports her signature blend of shimmering vibratos and gutsy soul-growls.
