The early '60s New York City-based Candid was one of the first musician-run labels. Iconoclastic multi-reed player/composer Eric Dolphy was featured on several Candid albums as a sideman. The valuable document CANDID DOLPHY, consisting mainly of previously unreleased alternate takes, shows Dolphy to be a versatile accompanist. The collection is also is a fine sampler of the cutting-edge New York jazz scene of the time.
Dolphy wails the blues behind Abbey Lincoln ("T'ain't Nobody's Business"), soars with Charles Mingus (a harrowing "Stormy Weather"), and takes "Body and Soul" to exciting new places in company of Roy Eldridge and Jo Jones. Rounding out this set are three tunes from the sessions that produced the superb Booker Little album OUT FRONT, featuring Max Roach and Don Friedman.|
