Singer-guitarist Gonzaguinha, son of accordion legend Luiz Gonzaga, left quite an imprint on Brazilian pop music before his untimely death in 1991. NO SAMBA shows why with 16 tracks, highlighted by "Desenredo" and "Comportamento Geral."
This album by Gonzaguinha is dedicated to samba, in several styles: samba-enredo, samba de breque, samba-embalo, Northeastern coco with zabumba and triangle, and almost a bossa nova. It is a posthumous compilation which includes his first hit, "Comportamento geral," which also brought him the enmity of the military government - from then on, censorship would veto most of his songs. Strong social thematic is an indissoluble part of his lyrics, but he is also celebrated by his delicacy and rare sensibility when talking about the feminine imaginary. Because of this, this album is different from his other releases, being basically a happy one, singing the beauty of life ("O que e o que e," "Deixa Dilson," "Artistas da vida," "Com a perna no mundo"). Other successes are "Desenredo" (his version for the history of Brazil), and "Geraldinos e Arquibaldos," inventive recreation of the samba swing in body percussive effects. ~ Alvaro Neder
