This CD features the Japanese shakuhachi player Kuniyoshi Sugawara and pieces by modern Japanese composers, some of which have been written specifically for him. There are two solo pieces, some pieces for shakuhachi, koto, and/or jushichigen (17-stringed koto), and a duet for shakuhachis written by the late koto master and composer Tadao Sawai (1937-1997). Sugawara is an accomplished shakuhachi player who deserves to be known outside Japan. By offering a CD of only modern pieces (some of which are more traditional in style while others are more avant-garde in style), Sugawara demonstrates that many Japanese composers are still interested in writing music for their traditional instruments (although it was for some on this CD their first or second piece) and that their pieces are masterworks of great musical interest.
