It has been said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. There is no need, however, to teach Ginger Baker anything new--he has been a jazz drummer ever since before his days with the rock trio Cream. Besides fine solo efforts with sidemen like Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell, Baker has kept himself busy with projects like COWARD OF THE COUNTY. Here Baker has teamed with the Denver Jazz Quintet to present original music with special guests like saxophone powerhouse James Carter, organist Shamie Royston and guitarists Todd Ayers and Glenn Taylor.
Baker's assertive drumming and Blakey-like bandleading abilities, combined with the considerable talents of his younger comrades, make this disc as much a visceral event as an aural one. From the opening blues "Cyril Davis" and the rolling "Ginger Spice" Baker is clearly in the driver's seat. He grooves, and prods his men into dynamic heights through captivating arrangements like the bombastic "Dangle The Carrot." Also, ballads like the gentle "Megan Showers" and the closing "Jesus, I Just Want To Go To Sleep" (featuring Carter on bass clarinet), display Baker's highly sensitive creativity. Other highlights include the expressive title track and the raucous "Daylight."
