Hailing from the same South Carolina parts as Hootie & The Blowfish, Edwin McCain injects the singer/songwriter niche of the 1970s with a dash of soul and plenty of moxy. Combining the subtlety of James Taylor with the grit of Steve Winwood, McCain's debut, HONOR AMONG THIEVES, shows off chops honed by countless performances in cafes and resorts around Hilton Head, Charleston and the like.
As a songwriter, McCain uses music therapeutically--touching upon domestic violence ("Russian Roulette"), coping with the loss of two loved ones in a week ("Alive") and with growing older ("Sorry To A Friend"). Yet while some of these topics are rather weighty, McCain is far from being a gloom merchant. The other side of his considerable well of talent is an unerring sense of melody, a breezy acoustic guitar, and the ability to incorporate diverse musical styles into his songs.
Tower Of Power's Greg Adams is among the album's guests, and his horn charts trod the same ground as the Dave Matthews Band on "America Street," while a Kenny G-like sax break permeates "Guinevere." McCain also recruits old friends Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan from the Blowfish on "Solitude," a track that finds McCain's raspy vocal style uniting with Rucker's soulful growl to guarantee plenty of goose bumps. And though "Thirty Pieces" may sound like an outtake from the JT catalog, McCain's music has a funkier side that manifests itself on songs like "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Jesters, Dreamers & Thieves." His scatting on both flows naturally, and on the latter, his band rides a bubbling bass-line and funky horns that cry for the replay button on your CD player.
