This collection of songs recorded by jazz/pop artist Katerine combines two previous releases, LES CREATURES and L'HOMME A 3 MAINS. Les Creatures/L'Homme a 3 Mains is the bizarre and confounding album of French pop and acoustic balladry that falls somewhere between Beck and Jean-Louis Murat. It consists of two CDs, one focusing on the acoustic tracks (the "Les Creatures" side), while the other contains the moody French pop (the "L'Homme a 3 Mains" side). Together, they show a musician that isn't afraid to let the listener into his everyday life, recording phone conversations, various odd noises, and singing confessional songs in a moody and sensitive manner. The only real problem with the album is that Katerine hasn't quite figured out how to write memorable melodies. He comes very close at times, creating excellent moods for melodies to fit into. But they never really do, and instead he comes off as intense and creative without really doing much more than piling a lot of stuff onto his tracks. He's very good at blending together the various pieces, making this a good investment for fans of studio trickery and experimental folk-rock. But do not approach this album with the idea that it will blow you away; just realize that there are a lot of great ideas and experimental approaches here that will at least keep your interest. ~ Bradley Torreano
