When lounge music experienced a revival during the late '90s, English record companies were amongst the first to put out compilations of this style for eager listeners. One of the finest early releases in this vein was In Flight Entertainment, a compilation of lounge tracks selected from the vaults of Polygram Records by a pair of lounge-specialist DJs known as the Karminsky Experience. Instead of limiting itself to one country's lounge sounds, In Flight Entertainment presents a potpourri of sounds from countries as diverse as England, France, and South America. This disc also plays up how one country's lounge musicians would play with the styles of another country: "Mambo Mania" finds Germany's Bert Kaempfert & His Orchestra trying Latin sounds on for size and "Come Ray and Come Charles" is an exercise in American-styled soul music by France's Michel Legrand. There are also some great covers that push familiar pop tunes in new and interesting directions: "Light My Fire" by Edmundo Ros transforms the psychedelic rock of the Doors into a stately cha cha instrumental, while the Button Down Brass transforms the classic soul instrumental "Tequila" into a wild slice of pop-jazz filled to the brim with swinging horns. In Flight Entertainment also has a leg up on similar compilations because of the careful thought put into its programming. Since it was assembled by DJs, it benefits from a dance-friendly quality and sense of melodic flow that many lounge compilations lack. As a result, it manages to be an exciting listen from start to finish. In short, In Flight Entertainment's combination of consistency and adventurous sounds makes it one of the best lounge compilations available. ~ Donald A. Guarisco
