Volume seven in the Zofia Komeda Presents series on Power Brothers Records, this set, recorded in 1965, finds the late composer and pianist leading a quintet that presupposed his brilliant sextet that came into existence a year later. Along with regulars Michal Urbaniak on tenor and Tomasz Stanko on trumpet are bassist Bo Stief and drummer Simon Kopel. Recorded live in Copenhagen, this set features three long pieces, totaling a little over 43 minutes; the most notable is, of course, the famous title tune, performed here with grace, elegance, and requisite fire by the band shortly after it was written. The longest work here, "Svantetic," that is over 22 minutes, offers the band in all its slightly outside swinging glory. The rhythmic pulse shuttles and kicks, the harmonics are pushed to the breaking point of convention and a little over, and the fingerpopping quotient is the highest of anything in Komeda's catalog. As has become the norm with this series, there is an extended videotaped interview with Komeda as a bonus CD-R cut at the end of the disc. ~ Thom Jurek
