Robin Spielberg's 2004 release MEMORIES OF UTOPIA is made up of relaxed piano compositions and a few techno dance tracks. For example, "Dancing in the Quiet Rain features thumping quarter notes and a lively piano performance from Spielberg. On this tune, the piano melody tip-toes lightly over the throbbing electronic beat. "Piano Parlour Soiree" shows Spielberg's softer side. This finely-hewn piece suggests Frederick Chopin's work, particularly his etudes. However, in contrast to the music of Chopin, Spielberg's composition is less harmonically complex. It falls back on pop chord progressions and uses far less dissonance or musical tension. Indeed, this album is designed to soothe the listener. Unlike Chopin, Spielberg's work generally avoids abrasive chords or dark, moody passages. This is best evidenced by the peaceful track "Meditation." The melody of this tune caresses the listener like a gentle rainfall; each note falling like tiny droplets on a windowpane.
