Cirque du Soleil's 2002 stage production, VAREKAI ("Wherever" in Bohemian patois) is the story of a fallen angel who wanders the underworld with a series of strange guides. His salvation comes in part from realizing the oneness of all humanity. Fittingly, the album of the same name (this is not the exact score of the show) is a maelstrom of exotic electronica containing a multiversity of ethnic flavors. African djembe sidles up to Gypsy violin, French musette-style accordions sigh over Indonesian shakers, and the languages of the world are sung, chanted, and whispered to thrilling effect. "Funambul" ("tightrope walker" in French) makes haunting use of a variety of vocal tricks: goose-bump-inducing chorale singing, a lovely mezzo-soprano solo, a reoccurring spoken-word part, and mysterious child-like whispers. Other ethnic fusion highlights include the techno-Qawwali "Oscillum," and "Emballa," a highly infectious faux-Afro-Brazilian number. Inspired by gypsies and nomads, VAREKAI celebrates the wandering spirit in all of us.
