In 1999, Fantasy reissued two classic Lilly Brothers albums on Vol. 5 of its Prestige/Folklore Years series: Bluegrass Breakdown (recorded in either late 1962 or early 1963) and Country Songs (recorded in 1964). Hearing the albums back to back on a single 75-minute CD, the listener is exposed to two very different but equally appealing sides of vocalist/mandolin player Everett Lilly and vocalist/guitarist Bea Lilly. On one hand, they're heard playing some very passionate, hot-blooded bluegrass; the siblings' versions of Bill Monroe's "Bluegrass Breakdown," Charlie Monroe's "Rollin' On," and Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" aren't exactly short on exuberance. Much of the CD, however, finds them focusing on the gentle, old-time, pre-Hank Williams country styles of the 1920s and 1930s. The influence of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers (country's most important pre-Williams stylists) can be heard on Everett's "Beneath the Old Southern Skies" as well as such Carter gems as "Rosewood Casket" and "The Storms Are on the Ocean." The Lilly Brothers' treatment of Lefty Frizzell's "The Long Black Veil" is especially interesting; Frizzell, one of the top electric honky tonkers of the 1950s, didn't record the ballad until 1959, but the Lilly Brothers give it an acoustic 1930s-style makeover. This is a CD that lovers of bluegrass and unplugged, pre-World War II country should make a point of obtaining. ~ Alex Henderson
