If there's a theme to this installment of the Prestige/Folklore Years series, it's not explicitly stated. However, it seems to focus on the loosest and most good-timey aspects of their early and mid-1960s folk output, drawing from ragtime blues, old-timey folk, bluegrass, and jug band artists. The disc is a fair collection of the sunnier side of the 1960s folk revival, though some of it's short on guts and originality. The big names here are Reverend Gary Davis, the Holy Modal Rounders, Dave Van Ronk (who has just one cut), and the Charles River Valley Boys. More intriguing to the collector are the less celebrated names. The Lilly Brothers, Harry and Jeane West, and Keith and Rooney all did country-flavored old-time music or bluegrass. The True Endeavor Jug Band was an odd informal conglomeration including Danny Kalb, Artie Traum, Samuel Charters (who is better known as a producer, and who wrote the liner notes for this series), and his wife Ann Charters (a noted writer). The most enjoyable tracks, though, are those by the Folk Strangers and the New Strangers, both of which showcase excellent acoustic guitar by Danny Kalb. ~ Richie Unterberger
