Photographer: Dolores Metzner. Any jazz collection that ranges from Thelonious Monk's angular interpretation of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" to Paul Desmond's unmistakable mellow alto saxophone on "Look for the Silver Lining" is worth checking out. Opening with the ultimate version of "All the Things You Are," performed by Art Tatum and Ben Webster, this disc lives up to its Jazz Giants billing with selections performed by Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Jackie McLean, Art Pepper, Blue Mitchell, Clark Terry and others. Sidemen include John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, Philly Joe Jones and Roy Haynes. With tracks culled from the Fantasy family of labels during the '50s, '60s and '70s, the settings move from Hampton Hawes' piano trio on "Yesterdays" to Terry Gibbs' big band arrangement of "The Song Is You." Pianist Mal Waldron and his sextet (featuring Coltrane) take "The Way You Look Tonight" in a refreshingly different direction from its usual treatment, exemplifying what great jazzmen can do with even the most familiar of material. And if you think of pianist Bill Evans only for his contemplative solo and trio recordings, his extended quintet take on "Nobody Else But Me" from 1976 will remind you of how hard he could swing. Containing fine playing and inventive arrangements throughout, this is an excellent addition to the Jazz Giants Play series. ~ Jim Newsom
