Arranger: Bill Holman. Hoagy Carmichael is often thought of as a moldy fig Dixielander and purveyor of sentimental fluff like "Old Buttermilk Sky." But this 12-track entry in Fantasy's Jazz Giant series shows that Carmichael wrote some great tunes that have since become jazz standards, including "Stardust," "Rockin' Chair," "The Nearness of You," "Georgia On My Mind" and "Lazy River." Interpreted here by Herbie Mann, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Milt Jackson, Ray Bryant, Oscar Peterson and Carmichael's old playing partner, Bix Beiderbecke ("Riverboat Shuffle"), this excellent collection shows off the timelessness of Hoagy's vast song catalog to good advantage. ~ Cub Koda
