The veteran tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate is heard here in a relaxed 1959 set of standards and blues jams that displays his well-rounded tone and sensitive technique at its mature best. With a robust yet nuanced style, similar to his peers such as Ben Webster and Lester Young, Tate sounds as comfortable on laid-back vehicles such as "I'm Just a Lucky So and So" and "East of the Sun" as on "Miss Ruby Jones," a scaled-down big-band chart with an ineffable swing.
