For those used to the hard driving swing that Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers delivered over their near half-century of existence, the floating, esoteric tribal grooves of CHILD'S DANCE may result in head scratching befuddlement. These early '70s Prestige sessions represent a detour from the Messengers' hard bop style towards a more psychedelic sound, a reflection of the recordings' moment in time. The influences of Miles Davis' IN A SILENT WAY and the electric explorations of Charles Lloyd are evident. Making significant contributions are John Hicks, Walter Davis, George Cables, and Cedar Walton, all of whom perform on the electric piano. Of special note is the appearance of a 20-year old Stanley Clark, who makes remarkable use of the electric bass, an instrument he would revolutionize. A myriad of ethnic percussion, airy flutes, soprano saxophones, and some highly creative arrangements makes CHILD'S DANCE a pleasantly peculiar sidetrack in Blakey's storied career.
