Two of tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons' favorite combo formats were organ-based quartets and quintets. The tracks on this collection were culled from dates in the early '60s, and were originally released on TWISTIN' THE JUG, VELVET SOUL, and ANGEL EYES. Blues standards ("Stormy Monday Blues"), Duke Ellington chestnuts ("Satin Doll"), and wistful ballads ("Angel Eyes") are executed with equal skill. Two different bands are featured, one centered on Jack McDuff's Hammond organ, the other around the organ work of Johnny "Hammond" Smith. McDuff's outfit also includes trumpeter Joe Newman, while Smith calls upon the talents of Frank Wess on tenor sax and flute. McDuff and Smith trade solos with Ammons and also join him in unison to thicken the main melodies. Ammons' phrasing embraces blues, bebop, and R&B, while his elegant tone can glide with sultry innuendo.
