The CD reissue of MESSAGE is actually a conglomeration of two mid-'50s Hank Mobley Prestige dates, MESSAGE and HANK MOBLEY'S SECOND MESSAGE. Both were recorded mere days apart in July 1956 and featured stellar talents such as Donald Byrd, Kenny Dorham, Jackie McLean, Walter Bishop, and Art Taylor. As with most Prestige dates of the period, these were blowing sessions that featured an abundance of extended solos on familiar standards. Regardless of the format, however, dates like these are a hard bop fan's dream come true.
Though Mobley was designated the leader, these dates were more or less a free-for-all, the primary goal being to assemble a talented pool of players and let them jam. Neither of these sessions disappoints, as classic boppers like "Bouncing With Bud," "52nd Street Theme," and "Au Privave" provide plenty of opportunity for some stellar blowing. Also included are a couple of tasteful ballads, such as Rodgers and Hart's "Little Girl Blue" and the standard "I Should Care," which let Mobley and Dorham, respectively, express their softer sides with some slow velvety lines. Finally, of particular note is the exciting Mobley original "Message From The Border" featuring a hot Latin groove by Taylor.
