This is a superb installment in the series documenting the historic 1940s Carnegie Hall concerts by Ellington and his Orchestra. Though ostensibly suffering from the recent departure of many of its finest players--including Joe Nanton, Barney Bigard, and Ben Webster--the Orchestra sounds as tight, elegant, and passionate as ever. Sterling performances by Jimmy Hamilton, Harry Carney, and the incomparable Johnny Hodges, the rock-solid rhythm section of Sonny Greer and Oscar Pettiford, and the hands-on arranging artistry of Billy Strayhorn make this a star-studded affair that glitters spectacularly throughout. The program includes superior readings of such favorites as "Caravan" and "In A Mellow Tone," but focuses primarily on material written for the concert hall, not for the dance hall. Selections from "The Black, Brown and Beige Suite" mix the Duke's sophisticated compositional prowess with themes of social conscience. Also included is a new "tonal group"--"Melloditti," "Fugueaditty," and "Jam-A-Ditty"--that mingles classical strains with rhythmic structures, and a revisiting of one of Ellington's earliest longer works, a pairing of "Diminuendo" and "Crescendo In Blue." As usual, it's hard to go wrong with the Duke, and this 1946 Carnegie Hall concert finds him in top form.
