Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Benny Carter (alto saxophone); Louis Bellson (drums).
Recorded in Los Angeles, California on June 25, 1954. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green.
This 1954 album documents the meeting of two great jazz masters--pianist Art Tatum and alto saxophonist Benny Carter. Tatum, known for his blazing solos and harmonic inventiveness, is tempered here by the bluesy sax musings of Carter. The two work off of one another beautifully, and Tatum's hyperactive musical style is offset nicely by the laid-back, fluid lines of Carter. Drummer Louis Bellson acts as the glue that keeps it all together, and his soft brushwork provides the perfect platform for the two soloists. This is particularly apparent on the lazy "Under a Blanket of Blue" and the up-tempo "'S Wonderful."
Oddly enough, the lack of a bass player doesn't hinder the record at all. This is no surprise, though, given Tatum's immense chops; he can cover bass notes with ease. The standout track of this release is its closer, "Idaho," a real barn-burner that spotlights not only Tatum, but the exquisite brush work of Bellson. At the end of the tune, Tatum and Carter solo simultaneously, bringing the song (and the album) to a remarkable finish.
