This live set, recorded in Frankfurt in 1970, spotlights the solo skills of three formidable brass men: trombonist Al Grey, tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and the red-hot Roy Eldridge on trumpet. Backed by the unbeatable rhythm section, including Basie himself at the keys, Grey, Davis, and Eldridge breathe new life into old sawbones like "In A Mellow Tone" and "Makin' Whoopee." Cuts like the Sonny Stitt-penned title track swing vigorously in grand Basie style, but are also informed by the bop-oriented vocabularies of Grey and Eldridge, whose fluid, powerful attacks complement each other. "I Surrender Dear" show the instrumentalists' facility in the ruminative, lyric mode, while the finale, "5400 North," is a blues number that builds tension with the aid of Eldridge's incendiary chops and Basie's exuberant stride piano. In all, LOOSE WALK is a satisfying set, highlighted by outstanding musicianship.
