Unlike the various Kansas City groups that Basie spearheaded, the Kansas City 8 is the only ensemble where all of the musicians were at one time or another part of Basie's small or large bands. It also represents a spectrum of ages. GET TOGETHER lets us hear the Count's right-hand man, all-around jazz veteran Freddie Green, as well as bassist John Clayton, then a young lion. Most notably, we hear underestimated and sadly overlooked tenor man Budd Johnson, known to players in Basie's era as a crFme de la crFme improviser. The group shines on "Ode to Pres," where trumpeter Clark Terry plays a bebop-inflected, harmon-muted solo over a 12-bar blues, while the rest of the band sits out. Johnson never received the public accolades afforded to contemporaries such as Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins, so it's a pleasure to hear him here. On "Swinging on the Cusp," Johnson plays a lyrical and rhythmically diverse baritone solo that leaves little room for development even by the likes of Eddie Davis or Basie himself.
