Part of producer and concert promoter Norman Granz's project to organize (and record) international tours for great jazz groups, these cuts of the Ellington Orchestra were chosen by Granz from the group's best European dates in the '60s. The full range of Ellington's genius is presented here: from the rhythmic exoticism of "Bula," "Guitar Amor" and "Silk Lace" (with a great passage by clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton) to the lilting "In A Sentimental Mood" (with exquisite playing by Paul Gonsalves) and the uptempo big band jam of "E.S.P."
For variety, Grantz included three tracks of Duke playing with only a rhythm section, including two versions of a number called "The Shepherd," and "Kinda Dukish." The group's energy in these live performances is palpable, and one is struck by the ensemble's precision, range and the skill of players like Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves. Though the sound quality of the recordings is not pristine, it is certainly good enough to make IN THE UNCOMMON MARKET a valuable document of these concert renditions of Ellington's classic, yet still freshly adventurous, compositions.
録音 : ステレオ (Live)
