Recorded between 1970 and 1975, as Lee "Scratch" Perry was cementing his reputation as the mad genius of Jamaican reggae, REVOLUTION DUB is a standout collection of classic dub rhythms. At this time, Perry was simultaneously opening his own studio, the legendary Black Ark, and turning dub, or instrumental reggae, into its own art form. No longer content with providing instrumental versions of his hits for sound system DJs to toast over, Perry showcased his killer house band the Upsetters, anchored by the rock-solid rhythm section of brothers Carlton and Aston "Family Man" Barrett, in hard booming tracks that exhibited the group's instrumental virtuosity in its purest form. Meanwhile, Perry mixes in bizarre sound effects, stream-of-consciousness spoken commentary, and on the self-explanatory "Kojak", sound bites from American TV shows. "Dub the Rhythm" and "Woman's Dub" both feature scarifying rants from Perry himself. A true '70s classic.|
