Recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July, 1979--when digital recording was still a novelty, hence the charmingly dated album title--this brief, eight-track CD features performances--joint and separate--by singer Ella Fitzgerald, guitarist Joe Pass, and the Count Basie Orchestra. Fitzgerald deserves her top billing, taking most of the star turns on standards like George and Ira Gershwin's "I Can't Get Started With You" and "I Cover the Waterfront," and as always, she sounds magnificent. The Count Basie Orchestra sounds impressive throughout, but it's the last three tracks, with Pass showcased on interesting choices like Neal Hefti's "L'il Darlin'," Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way," and Sonny Rollins' "Oleo," that are the most satisfying.
