Gene Ammons recorded so extensively for the Prestige label in the early '60s that, while he was incarcerated on drug charges for a good part of the decade, the company was able to keep a steady stream of new Ammons releases before the public. LATE HOUR SPECIAL is one of those albums, and it's a lovely rainy afternoon session arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson. The sultry balladry finds Ammons' peerless tenor saxophone emoting over a twelve-piece band (that often sounds bigger, thanks to Nelson's colorful and inventive arrangements). It's remarkable just how much strong material Ammons recorded in these few years. Far from being mere marketplace filler, this is a winning and essential set. The combination of Ammons and Nelson doesn't get much better than the gorgeous rendition of "I Want to Be Loved (But By Only You)."
