Although Big Joe Turner is primarily remembered for his boogie-woogie and jump blues dates of the 1930s, `40s, and `50s, the blues icon continued recording well into the `80s. HAVE NO FEAR, JOE TURNER IS HERE was cut in 1978, and features the powerhouse singer with horns, a pianist, and a rhythm section (which includes guitarist Pee Wee Crayton). Unlike the high-energy jams usually associated with Turner, the material here favors stretched out, slow-burn blues. The tunes include Woody Guthrie's "So Long (It's Been Good to Know Yuh)," Ellington's "Rocks In My Bed," and three Turner originals. There's plenty of stretching out from all involved, but it's the front man's punchy singing that steals the show. HAVE NO FEAR may not qualify as classic Turner, but it's a welcome and highly enjoyable addition to his catalogue.
