Even in the 1970s, after decades as a top-shelf jazz trumpeter with Count Basie and on his own, Harry "Sweets" Edison still had something to say, as shown on his 1977 album, SIMPLY SWEETS. Part of the key to Edison's artistic longevity was always his adherence to his trademark values of simplicity and bluesy swing, which are employed to excellent effect here. It doesn't hurt that he's aided in this endeavor by another Basie alumnus, sax man Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (one seemingly couldn't break into the Basie band without a snappy nickname). On a brace of tunes based on blues changes and terse melodic statements--including "One For The Count," an homage to Edison and Davis's former boss--the small group keeps things moving while maintaining plenty of melodic interest.
