"Rojo" (1958) followed the success of "Manteca"--an earlier Prestige album featuring the Garland trio plus conga drummer Ray Barretto. While this trio (with George Joyner on bass and Charlie Persip on drums) isn't quite as strong as the "Manteca" trio (with Paul Chambers and Art Taylor), the combination with Barretto still works; "Rojo" is a fine album.
Garland was a solid, hard bop pianist with an even, ringing touch and distinctive "block chords" approach (exemplified here on "You Better Go Now"); but he was also capable of a lovely lyricism, as in his performance on the ballad "We Kiss In a Shadow." The bluesy side of Red is well captured on "Ralph J. Gleason Blues."
Altogether, "Rojo" is a fine, swinging album. Check out "Rediscovered Masters, Vol. 1" to hear his trio with Chambers and Taylor.
